French polishing is a specialist technique that achieves a high-gloss finish while enhancing the colour and beauty of the underlying wood. This technique became popular in the Victorian era and was commonly used as a finishing technique for wooden furniture made from mahogany, walnut and other expensive timber species. In conjunction with Gareth Carter, a highly experienced furniture restorer with over 28 years of experience, we provide our clients with professional French polishing services. French polishing is an age-old, labour intensive wood finishing technique with its popularity dating back to the 19th century.
The process combines the manual application of shellac formula, oils and abrasives (pumice or fine sandpapers) with specialist rubbing techniques to achieve a lustrous finish.
The process involves building up layers to achieve a high gloss superior finish and each new layer can only be applied once the previous layer has dried. When applied correctly, French polish will achieve a flawless, high gloss finish that accentuates the rich colours of the wood.
Due to its composition, French polish has a lower melting point compared to its lacquer counterparts. However, this can be seen as a positive as it is much easier to restore a piece of furniture if it sustains damage.
We can restore all kinds of wooden furniture with specialist polishing techniques including French polishing. Our polishing services include:
